E137: Where do Belonging and Healing fit into the Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (ID&E) Spectrum?
The ID&E practice has recently been targeted by many groups in the United States and some globally. Many of the group leaders claim that it discriminates against their civil rights. The real goal is to minimize or eliminate ID&E because many people feel it is unnecessary.
Belonging and healing are essential for authentic inclusion, diversity, and equity (ID&E). Cultivating a sense of belonging allows individuals to feel acknowledged and appreciated, fostering a secure atmosphere where real connections can flourish. It's essential to heal from historical injustices to build trust while promoting psychological safety, allowing people to share their thoughts freely, and closing the gap between inclusion and mental health. Prioritizing healing over performance pressures often jeopardizes genuine connection and engagement. The effectiveness of ID&E is best evaluated through heightened employee engagement, retention, and trust. ID&E strategies will balance accountability and empathy, incorporate well-being metrics, and address concerns that ID&E might unfairly affect civil rights. By prioritizing belonging and healing, organizations can redefine the conversation to highlight the true importance of ID&E in fostering equitable workplaces that honor all identities.
