In This Time (Shorts): Episode 4 – The Cross-Country RV Adventure
The morning to leave arrived faster than expected. Time, as they say, waits for no one. The MWendo-Joseph family was setting out on a grand cross-country RV adventure from Tucson, Arizona, to Washington, D.C.
Dad, why can't we just fly there? Caleb asked, suggesting a six-hour red-eye flight. Ayo, ever the adventurer, laughed. Where is the fun in that? This journey would cover about 2,301 miles over four to five days, with each segment lasting roughly four hours and thirty minutes. Ayo envisioned shared driving shifts, stories, and journal entries.
The drive started with enthusiasm, a new experience for everyone. Ayo kicked it off with reggae from Yellowman. Carmel, however, preferred Jill Scott, much to Ashanti's amusement. The Arizona desert gave way to rocky mesas and pecan trees in New Mexico, with the Rio Grande peeking into view.
Lunch was a diverse affair, accommodating everyone's dietary tastes, from pescatarian to vegan. Then, the after-lunch effect hit, and everyone, including Uno and Duos, fell asleep, leaving Ashanti to her thoughts. Later, Caleb took over, blasting crunchy music to stay awake. The Texas landscape flattened out, with oil pumps and wind farms breaking the vast emptiness.
The RV life was taking its toll, and energy dwindled. Arriving at the San Antonio RV park, Ayo faced the challenge of parking the beast. Luckily, Roger, the attendant, was there to guide him with hand signals. With some humor and a few attempts, they finally settled in. The first leg was complete, filled with unexpected moments and a growing appreciation for the journey itself.
