New city, new challenges! Ashanti faces impostor syndrome and meets a new neighbor, thanks to a bounding Great Dane! Discover the heartwarming chaos of finding community in Washington, D.C., in In This Time!

The MWendo-Joseph family finally moved into their new brownstone in Washington D.C.'s diverse Kalorama neighborhood. It reminded Ashanti and Ayo of their younger days in New York City, a familiar mix of urban closeness and historic charm.

Ashanti quickly reached out to her friend and coach, Melody, an executive coach specializing in leadership development for African American women. Ashanti confessed to experiencing impostor syndrome again, a common struggle for women of color due to limited mentors. Melody, always wise, reminded her that even among celebrities and political stars, everyone is just flesh and blood like we are.

Then came an unforgettable meeting. Alma, a new neighbor, was sweeping her porch when her oversized Great Dane, Bruno, launched himself like a comet over the fence directly toward Ashanti and her two Beagles, Uno and Duos. What seemed like a majestic attack turned into a very enthusiastic welcome, with the dogs becoming instant besties.

Alma, embarrassed but relieved, introduced herself as Bruno's emotional support human. Ashanti, laughing, replied that she was Uno and Duos’ daily chaos coordinator. Alma, a real estate agent, offered her excellent mofongo and terrible cocktails, hinting at a mentorship circle for women in transition.

This unexpected encounter felt like the beginning of something for Ashanti. Finding community and support in new places sometimes literally involves a big, friendly dog.
